Are you an International Physiotherapist applicant for HCPC ?

Updated: Jun 26, 2021

If you want to work as a Physiotherapist in the UK you need to have HCPC license with you, and for that, the first place you will need to visit online is Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The process begins with filling the form, the form which you have downloaded from the above link,

After that you will have to start arranging all the documents, remember the transcripts and syllabus should be sealed and signed by university/college and should not be less than 6 months old. The HCPC will do a background check of your bachelor college and which degree you hold, and if you have any PG degree, do submit it. It will strengthen your application.

In the form they will ask for your work experience, they want to know where you were working, where you are working at present as an international physiotherapist and what experience you have gained and what skills you have learned in the following years.

The HCPC will compare all these to the UK requirements. They have their own set criteria, if they find that you are missing something they will ask you, like submitting case studies in case you are a freshly graduate and do not have work experience.

Standards of Proficiency

There are currently 15 “Standards of Proficiency” for physiotherapists issued by the HCPC.

Registrant physiotherapists must:

1. be able to practise safely and effectively within their scope of practice

2. practise within the legal and ethical boundaries of their profession

3. be able to maintain fitness to practise

4. practise as an autonomous professional, exercising their own professional judgement

5. be aware of the impact of culture, equality, and diversity on practice

6. be able to practise in a non-discriminatory manner

7. understand the importance of and be able to maintain confidentiality

8. be able to communicate effectively

9. work appropriately with others

10. be able to maintain records appropriately.

11. reflect on and review practice.

12. be able to assure the quality of their practice.

13. understand the key concepts of the knowledge base relevant to their profession.

14. be able to draw on appropriate knowledge and skills to inform practice.

15. understand the need to establish and maintain a safe practice environment.

Probably, the last six may be of interest to an international physiotherapist who qualified outside of the UK.

Nowadays HCPC are strict with their standards, they have a new system of identifying any shortfalls in these standards, from your application. So; before filling your application form do read these points thoroughly. It’s important to realize that you achieve this through your post qualification training and post-qualification experience as an international physiotherapist.

In other words, you need to show that you have met these ‘standards of proficiency’ in your work or training after you qualified.

Documents list

The form has a complete list of documents needed for successful registration.

English language

IELTS general or academic both are acceptable. IELTS General is easier as compared to Academic.

Remember you will have to score 7 bands in each module. If your overall score is 7 and above but in one module you score 6.5 in that case you will have to appear again.

If you hold a PG degree from UK University you might not need to appear for IELTS exams. But if you are an international applicant you will need an IELTS score no less than 7 in each of the 4 modules.

Scrutiny fee

The scrutiny fees you will have to pay upfront, you will receive a mail from them with a link in it. The link is active for 72 hours, if you missed it, or you do not get mail, in that case you will have to call them and pay them through credit card. If you are using another person's credit card of another person make sure he/she is nearby when you make a call to HCPC for payment. Because they ask for confirmation from a third person and this conversation is recorded.

The fee covers costs to carry out these qualification and experience background checks.

The scrutiny fee to the HCPC is currently £495.
